ABOUT US
Welcome to By Word Theatre. We’re a not-for-profit company that aims to provide pint-sized plays in Frome pub rooms.
We want to provide engaging, entertaining plays, some of which will be socially relevant.
Pub theatre is intimate, because the audience is only a few feet away from the play. For the actors, there’s nowhere to hide, so it is a very pure art form.
The limitations of pub theatre mean a tiny cast, and little or no scenery or special effects. And because we have those restrictions, we end up with a simple, stripped-down production which adds to the power of the play.
Pub theatre also serves to bring more people into the pub. And in the current economic climate, pubs need all the help they can get.
OUR VENUES
We play in rooms above pubs. Our home is the Crown, Keyford, Frome.
OUR HISTORY
Pub theatre is a relatively recent activity. The first modern pub theatre was the Freemasons’ Arms in Hampstead, which started in 1968, and was run by Leonie Scott-Matthews.
ByWord theatre, meanwhile, only started in 2023, and is aimed at enriching the Frome theatre scene.
